At AirGradient, openness is in our DNA. Open hardware, open software, open data. These are fundamental to empowering our community. We believe in transparent systems and user control. Building on this core principle, we’ve been working on a truly ambitious project: extending the logic of open licensing to its furthest natural reach.
Today, we unveil the AirGradient Public License (AGPL v1.0 - Atmospherics), a pioneering framework designed for our most essential shared resource. The Air we breathe is now licensed!
This license applies established open-source concepts to atmospheric interaction:
We believe this foundational license brings necessary structure and openness to an area previously ungoverned by clear terms. We invite everyone to familiarize themselves with this new standard.
…Okay, let’s pause and take a breath (while you still can without checking clauses 3a through 7f)… 😉
HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY from the AirGradient Team!
Phew. While we haven’t actually drafted a EULA for the air you breathe, perhaps this joke lands a little differently in today’s world.
Think about it: how many times have you scrolled past pages of dense Terms & Conditions or Privacy Policies, clicking “Agree” just to use a service or device? We often sign away rights concerning our data, usage patterns, and digital ownership without fully grasping the implications. The agreements governing our digital lives become increasingly complex and restrictive, often limiting freedoms we once took for granted.
So, while licensing the atmosphere is absurd today, the underlying trend of claiming ownership and control over fundamental aspects of our lives through impenetrable agreements isn’t entirely science fiction. It makes you wonder what the future might hold, doesn’t it?
That’s precisely why AirGradient remains fiercely committed to the opposite approach: Genuine openness, transparency, and user empowerment. Our commitment to open hardware and open software is our very core value. We believe you should understand and control the tools you use, especially when they relate to something as vital as the air quality in your home or workplace.
No hidden clauses, no rights grabs – just accurate, accessible data from devices designed to serve you.
Thanks for indulging our bit of satirical fun. Keep monitoring the real air, stay informed (about T&Cs too!), and have a fantastic April 1st!
