Connecting the DIY sensor to the AirGradient Dashboard is a two step process. First you need to connect the sensor to your WiFi network and then you need to add it to the AirGradient dashboard.
STEP 1: Conecting the sensor to WiFi
If you have flashed the code with the flag “boolean connectWIFI=true;”, when you power up the sensor the first time it will open a hotspot called “AirGradient xxx”. Connect with your phone to it and enter your Wifi network credentials. It will then connect to Wifi and start displaying and sending the air quality data.
If you have the serial debug on, you will see the logs with the requests going out. If the sensor ID has not been setup by the server, you will receive a 422 response. Once the server knows about the sensor (step 2), it will receive a 200 response.
STEP 2: Setting up the AirGradient dashboard
Once you have connected the sensor to your WiFi, head over to our onboarding website at:

It will first guide you through the account creation (or login if you already have an AirGradient account). Then you can setup a place. A place is where you can connect several sensors to. For example your house, school or office. Each place has its own dashboard.
Once you have your account and place setup, you can add a sensor to your place’s dashboard. This is done on the step called “Setup your sensor”.

For your DIY sensor, please click on the tap “Setup DIY Sensor” and then follow the three step process.
Step 1 gives you information about connecting the sensor to WiFi. If you have already done this (see STEP 1 above) you can click directly to Step 2.
Here you need to enter the following information:
Sensor Number
This is the individual number of the sensor and corresponds to the Chip-ID of the D1 mini.
When you startup the sensor, you can see a message “60s to connect to WiFi Hotspot AG-xxxxx”. The xxxxx is the serial number of the sensor. Please make sure that you use it in lower case only and also do not use “AG-” which is not part of the serial number. So if for example, the display shows “AG-625bf2”, then “625bf2” is the serial number.
Additionaly, you can also see it on the serial debug when it is connected to the WiFi and starts sending data.
In the serial debug you will find lines like:
“….airgradient.com/sensors/airgradient:CHIP_ID/measures " where “CHIP_ID” would stand for the actual chip id of the sensor.
Place
Under Place just select your place name that you setup. All sensors of one place will be on the same dashboard.
Name of Sensor Location
Here enter the location of the sensor. Most often this is the room name. For outside sensors you can also define the place where you put it.
Indoors Checkbox
Our system distinguishes between outside and inside sensors. So it is very important that you check indoors for all indoor sensors.
Notes about DIY Kit
If you bought the AirGradient DIY kit that comes with diy premium access, please enter below your tracking number from the shipment for verification. This will allow us to identfy that you have a free premium subscription as part of the purchase of the kit. It might take up to around a week until your account is upgraded to DIY premium.
Add Sensor to Dashboard
Once you filled in all the information, please click on the red “Add” button. This will add your sensor and location to the dashboard. Then you can go to Step 3 and either add another sensor or go to the dashboard.
