Monitor Kits

Why Air Quality Education Matters

Air pollution is a rapidly growing climate issue and is particularly essential for our younger generations to be aware of. AirGradient kits not only promote air pollution awareness but also equip students with essential skills needed in the modern world.

Students spend a significant 80% of their time within indoor environments, where air quality can be compromised by a number of factors. These include external pollutants infiltrating indoor spaces, as well as contaminants originating from inside, such as off-gassing furniture and cleaning chemicals. Furthermore, inadequately ventilated classrooms may experience elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), which can potentially have an adverse effect on students ability to learn effectively, and cause drowsiness and headaches.

By incorporating the measurement of key air quality parameters into their educational experience, students can acquire valuable knowledge about the presence and impact of various pollutants. This hands-on approach empowers them to identify these pollutants, fostering an understanding of the potential health implications associated with indoor air pollution. Moreover, this awareness lays the groundwork for students to engage in meaningful research, explore innovative solutions, and contribute to the development of strategies aimed at improving air quality. In essence, integrating air quality education into the curriculum provides students with a practical and informed perspective on the importance of healthy indoor environments.

“According to WHO More than 90% of the world’s children breathe toxic air every day. Air pollution is a rapidly growing climate issue and is particularly essential for our younger generations to be aware of. AirGradient kits not only promote air pollution awareness but also equip students with essential skills needed in the modern world.”

Your Class Project - What to Expect

Research & Assemble

Start your students project with air quality research. Let them explore their interests – whether it’s CO2, PM levels, chemicals, data analysis or coding. Once they’ve chosen their focus, it’s time to put the kit together. The monitors are designed to be student-friendly, making assembly easy while providing valuable insights into how monitors are constructed.

Analyse, Evaluate & Act!

Encourage your students to analyse and reflect on the data they collect with our powerful dashboard. The dashboard provides immediate insights into air quality and environmental conditions across multiple locations, allowing them to make practical, data-driven improvements in their learning environment and school. shaping their ongoing perspective on the issue of air pollution.

Empower your students to think like air quality scientists, collecting accurate data to make tangible improvements in classroom air quality.

What makes AirGradient Perfect for Schools?

AirGradient provides personalised support for your research needs. We’re here to assist and guide you at every step of your project. Additionally, we’re happy to offer a brief online presentation to your class. This presentation will cover our company background and the significance of addressing air pollution as an urgent concern.

Open Design allows Flexible Integration into the Curriculum

Our kits don’t require ANY coding. However, if a student wants to customise their research further, our kits are open hardware, and open-source, making it simple to modify and extend the code using the Arduino coding environment. Being open-source you are not locked in to any specific data platform but can connect the data to any server or use the AirGradient data platform - a data platform specifically made for air quality monitoring.

Reliable and Precise Data Collection

With AirGradient, your students can carry out accurate research. We use top quality sensor modules from industry leaders such as SenseAir, Sensirion, and Plantower, guaranteeing precision.

What Does an AirGradient Monitor Measure?

The monitor measures temperature and humidity along with the most important indoor air pollutants CO2, PM, TVOCs and NOX.

Particulate Matter (PM)

PM are fine particles suspended in the air and originate from combustion, natural events, and chemical reactions. They pose significant health risks because their small size allows deep penetration, potentially entering the bloodstream.

CO2

CO2 is carbon dioxide, a natural gas present in the air. CO2 levels can rise when many people are in a room, especially if it’s not well-ventilated. High levels of CO2 in a classroom can cause headaches, tiredness and lower cognitive performance.

TVOCs, NOX

TVOCs are organic chemicals that can easily evaporate and get into the air we breathe. They often come from indoor sources like new furniture or strong cleaning products. NOx are harmful gases that can be released by indoor gas stoves or boilers.

Temperature and Humidity

Monitoring indoor Temperature and Humidity is crucial. It helps maintain a comfortable learning environment and can alert you to potential mould problems caused by excessive humidity.

“We are introducing the monitors into our students science research and we will actively use their findings to make improvements in the school’s air quality.”

Crispian Waterman

Reasons to start an Air Quality Project in Your School?

Your Students breath in 10,000 Litres of Air every day. That has to be worth studying?

Turn Air Pollution into Class Projects

The AirGradient monitor allows your students to study a variety of air pollution topics and gives your students the flexibility to choose what they want to study. Choose to either dive deeply into one aspect, such as understanding CO2 in the classroom, or take a broad, interdisciplinary approach.

Inquiry-Based Research

Develop your students’ curiosity while nurturing essential academic skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving through meaningful projects. Air pollution is studied across multiple curriculums in STEM and Geography subjects.

Research Questions

  • Do 3D printers release harmful particles?
  • What are the CO2 levels in your exam rooms, and does it impact cognitive performance?
  • What happens to the air quality in your classroom when the windows are opened?

Student Agency

Encouraging students to build their own air quality monitors and engage in air quality research, not only teaches them practical skills and a better understanding of the environment but also helps them become more in control of their learning.

AirGradient provides 2000 Air Quality Monitors to UK Schools

AirGradient has been selected to provide air quality monitors for the biggest study of air quality in schools anywhere in the world (the SAMHE Project). The objective is to understand classroom air in UK schools post-covid, building an unparalleled data set of air quality in classrooms across the country and improve long-term air quality for all schools.

Our Air Quality Monitors are perfect for your Class Research

Having used the AirGradient indoor kits as well as the commercial AirGradient ONE in awareness projects with schools and universities here in Thailand, I am very keen on piloting this new outdoor monitor. I am also interested in exchanging ideas and resources for student engagement with this open source projct.

The San Joaquin Valley of California has extreme climate injustice and the worst air quality in the United States, yet continues poorly monitored. The SEEN Team has partnered with AirGradient to facilitate low-cost monitoring in rural disadvantaged communities, and to increase awareness and education related to air quality. We intend to provide more and better real-time air quality information for local decision makers to act in the best interest of their underserved communities.

I’m very happy to contribute to this open hardware project with my product design experience and working with the team to not only ensuring a beautiful look but a highly functional design. Turning the required air flow characteristics and vent specification into a good looking product was a challenge I really liked. I’m looking forward to see the product in many Citizen Science projects around the world.

Having tested numerous air quality sensors for the projects we are doing I found myself extremely impressed with AirGradient. Not only are they technically first class with their product, they have a level of engagement and adaptability which makes working with them very easy. A welcome element to this is their clear commitment to the importance of environmental issues, showing itself in their interest in the details of our projects - all this helps them to deliver…!
