SAMHE (Schools’ Air Quality Monitoring for Health and Education) is a UK-wide citizen science initiative designed with and for schools to better understand indoor air quality in classrooms. Launched in 2022 by a consortium of UK research institutions and supported by the Department for Education and EPSRC, the project provided over 1,000 schools with air quality monitors and access to an interactive Web App. Through curriculum-linked experiments and activities, students explored real-time data to understand how air quality affects health, learning, and classroom environments.

AirGradient supplied 2,000 monitors for the project, making SAMHE the largest classroom air quality study in the world. The project continues beyond its initial phase, offering free educational resources to all UK schools—even those without monitors. By combining data, education, and student engagement, SAMHE empowers the next generation to take meaningful action on indoor air quality and creates a model for integrating environmental science into everyday learning.
