Privacy Policy

At AirGradient we try and keep the data that we collect from our visitors to a minimum. The following explains what and how we collect personal data.

AirGradient Website (Landing Page)

As a visitor to the airgradient.com website (except for the pages listed below) the following applies:

  • No personal information is collected
  • No information such as cookies is stored in the browser
  • No information is shared with advertising companies or sold to third-parties
  • No information is mined and harvested for personal and behavioral trends
  • No information is monetized

We run the privacy focused Plausible web analytics platform to collect some anonymous usage data for statistical purposes. The goal is to track overall trends in our website traffic, it is not to track individual visitors. All the data is in aggregate only. No personal data is collected.

Data collected includes referral sources, top pages, visit duration, information from the devices (device type, operating system, country and browser) used during the visit and more.

Please note that above does not apply to our Support Page, Newsletter Sign Up Page and our Shop Page where we collect personal identifiable information in order to provide our service.

Above also does not apply if the url contains an affiliate id in the URL. In this case, a cookie consent banner is displayed.

Online Shop

We use Ecwid as our online shop. The Ecwid integration is only used at our Shop Page. We do not have influence on how Ecwid collects data but details can be found in Ecwid's Privacy Policy. This is why you might see a cookie consent banner when you access this page.

AirGradient Forum

We use a self-hosted version of discourse for our community forum at forum.airgradient.com. We track the page visits on our forum with the privacy focused Plausible web analytics platform.

Many features on our forum require a forum account for example to post and reply to topics. To sign up for a forum account, we require your name, a username, and an e-mail address.

We use your account data to identify you on the forum and to create pages specific to you, such as your profile page. Since our forum is public, all the information that you post (including your username) will be accessible to all visitors. Your email address that you use to signup will not be publicly visible.

We use your e-mail address to:

  • notify you about posts and other activity on the forum
  • reset your password and help keep your account secure
  • contact you in special circumstances related to your account
  • contact you about legal requests, like DMCA takedown requests

You may provide additional data for your account, like a short biography, your location, or your birthday, on the profile settings page for your account. We make that data available to others who can access the forum. You don’t have to provide this additional information, and you can erase it at any time. We store your account data as long as your account remains open.

More information can be found in the AirGradient Forum Privacy Policy.

AirGradient App

In order to access air quality data on the AirGradient App at app.airgradient.com you need an account. For this account we collect your name, email address and additional information required for the functionality of the dashboard, e.g. country, timezone and location data for monitors that you choose to make public.

We use your e-mail address to:

  • send you alerts from your air quality monitors
  • to send you daily or weekly air quality reports
  • reset your password and help keep your account secure
  • contact you in special circumstances related to your account
  • contact you about legal requests
  • send you information about software updates

If you join the Clean Air Advocates program, you might submit additional information to AirGradient, e.g. about your clean air activities that might get published on the AirGradient website and other channels.

The AirGradient App saves configurations on the server as well as locally in form of cookies.

AirGradient Newsletter

We regularly send email newsletters to our community to inform them about updates on our air quality monitors, our events and other air quality news in general. Each newsletter has an unsubscribe link at the bottom in case you do not want to receive newsletters anymore. We use a self-hosted version of Mautic to handle these newsletters. We have disabled both open tracking and link tracking on all emails sent.

When you contact us

When you write to us with a question or to ask for help. We keep that correspondence, which includes the email address, so that we have a history of past correspondences to reference if you reach out in the future. We use this data solely in connection with answering the queries we receive. We use Zendesk as our communication software. Please refer to their respective privacy statements for their handling of personal information.

Email providers

All emails are sent using a third-party email provider. We use gmail for our normal emails and Amazon SES for transactional emails and email reports and alerts (should you choose to subscribe to them).

Payments

Payments on our online shop are handled by Paypal and Stripe. Please refer to their respective privacy statements for their handling of personal information.

GDPR and your rights

If you are in the European Union or European Economic Area, or if GDPR applies to how we process your personal data, you have additional privacy rights.

For most AirGradient services, such as our website, app, dashboard, forum, newsletter, shop and support channels, AirGradient decides why and how the data is used. In GDPR language, this means AirGradient is usually the controller.

For some professional deployments, a customer decides the purpose of the deployment, who can access the dashboard, where monitors are placed, whether monitor data is public or private and how long the data should be kept. In those cases, AirGradient may act as a processor for that customer.

Depending on how you use AirGradient, personal data may include your name, email address, account information, order information, support messages, forum information, monitor ownership information, monitor location information and air quality monitor data when it can be linked to you or to a private location.

We only process personal data where we have a valid reason to do so. This may include providing the service you requested, answering support requests, processing orders, sending newsletters where you subscribed, securing and improving our services, complying with legal obligations, or following a professional customer's documented instructions.

You may have the right to ask us to access, correct, export, delete, restrict or stop certain use of your personal data. You may also withdraw consent where we rely on consent, for example for newsletters or optional public sharing. You can unsubscribe from newsletters through the link at the bottom of each newsletter.

Public monitor data needs special care. If you choose to make monitor data public, the selected public location, measurements, timestamps and related information may be visible through the AirGradient map, public API, OpenAQ or other enabled public data channels. Public data may be downloaded, cached, republished or combined with other datasets by third parties. If you later disable public sharing, we can stop future sharing through AirGradient-controlled channels, but we cannot guarantee deletion from systems outside our control.

We keep personal data only as long as needed for the reason it was collected, customer contracts, legal obligations, tax and accounting requirements, security, dispute handling, support history, backup expiry and public data commitments.

AirGradient users, customers, staff, infrastructure and service providers may be in different countries. Where GDPR transfer rules apply, we use appropriate safeguards such as data processing agreements, standard contractual clauses or equivalent terms, regional settings where available and data minimization.

More information about providers that may process data for AirGradient services is available in Subprocessors and Data Recipients. For professional deployments, data processing terms may also be covered in the Data Processing Agreement.

We protect personal data with reasonable technical and organizational safeguards. These may include access controls, multi-factor authentication for administrative systems where supported, TLS for data in transit, encryption at rest where supported by the relevant provider or storage system, backups, monitoring, vendor review and Incident Response Procedure.

More detail about these safeguards is available in our Information Security Policy, Backup and Disaster Recovery and Incident Response Procedure. For service availability information, we also maintain a server status page at https://uptime.airgradient.net/status/servers.

If you want to exercise GDPR rights or have GDPR-related questions, please contact us at support@airgradient.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on account, monitor, support or customer deployment data. If AirGradient acts as a processor for a professional customer, we may refer the request to that customer.
