Nationwide School Air Quality Monitoring in Lao PDR with UNICEF
Initiative Lead: UNICEF Lao PDR, Lao PDR’s Ministry of Education and Sports, Lao PDR’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, UNICEF East Asia Pacific, Arm Holdings, and AirGradient
Timeline: January 2025 - March 2025
Not long ago, people in the Lao PDR only had access to air quality data from one monitor. Now, with more than 160 monitors, many placed in schools, communities across the country, can finally see what’s in the air they’re breathing.
Project Details
Led by UNICEF Lao PDR and supported by national ministries and local partners, this project aims to close the country’s air quality data gap and protect children’s health. Using AirGradient monitors, schools and communities now have access to real-time air quality data for the first time.
Community Impact
Along with the monitors, training was provided to teachers, students, and local officials. Community members are learning how to read the data and respond to pollution risks. Local teams also joined workshops in Thailand to build skills in calibration and forecasting, helping ensure the long-term success of the network.
