Community Air Quality Monitoring in Sumberejo, Indonesia
Initiative Lead: National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) CLEAN-Air Indonesia Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Nafas Indonesia, and AirGradient
Timeline: March 2025
Thirteen AirGradient monitors were installed in public spaces across Sumberejo Village, East Java, as part of a collaborative effort to bring real-time air quality data to rural communities in Indonesia.
Project Details
Led by a research team from Universitas Brawijaya, supported by Nafas Indonesia, this initiative is part of NIHR CLEAN-Air Indonesia’s ongoing work to support clean air efforts through local engagement and accessible data. Working closely with the village government and community leaders, the team successfully set up 13 AirGradient Model O-1PST sensors in schools, health centers, and government offices. By making air quality data visible and understandable, the project aims to support healthier environments and more informed decision-making at the local level.
Community Impact
What makes this project special is its focus on community participation. Local residents, including university and village officials, were involved in the setup and trained on how to read and use the data. It’s a small step with big potential to help people in Sumberejo understand the air they breathe and take action to improve it.
