Why We’re Doing This

It’s simple. We are directly impacted by air pollution and know the harm it causes.

Our story began in 2019, during the intense burning season in northern Thailand. Our founders saw their own children and families struggling with the health consequences of breathing severely polluted air daily. Determined to protect their community, starting with their children’s school, they launched a project to install affordable air quality sensors. This enabled the school to monitor conditions and take proactive steps to improve indoor air, a measure that soon caught the eye of other concerned schools.

Today, AirGradient is a global team, but that initial, personal motivation remains our compass. Each of us, no matter where we are based, has faced the negative impacts of hazardous air quality. It’s this shared experience that drives our commitment to empower others facing similar challenges. Born from a grassroots effort, we deeply believe in supporting community projects and initiatives dedicated to creating healthier environments through cleaner air.

Communities & Organisations We’ve Worked With

At AirGradient, we actively participate in initiatives that help communities monitor and improve air quality. From donating monitors to underserved areas to collaborating with schools and organizations, our projects aim to raise awareness, provide real-time data, and promote healthier environments.

Pacha Ayllu

One example of our commitment in action is our partnership with Pacha Ayllu in Ecuador. This grassroots group, driven by dedicated parents and relatives deeply concerned about the impact of air pollution on children’s health, initiated the creation of a Family-Led Clean Air Observatory. Their goal is to provide citizens across Ecuador with accessible, real-time air quality data, empowering them to understand environmental conditions and advocate effectively for healthier communities. AirGradient is proud to support their vital work by donating outdoor and indoor monitors, which are being strategically placed near schools, childcare centers, and parks in major cities like Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca, turning community concern into data and action. Sustenta Honduras

We are also inspired by and actively support youth-led movements like Sustenta Honduras. This dynamic organization challenges traditional notions of changemaking by empowering young people in Honduras to take the lead on climate action and sustainable development. Through their ‘Aire Limpio Honduras’ project, Sustenta Honduras volunteers are installing AirGradient outdoor monitors - beginning in the town of Lamani - to democratize access to air quality information. Beyond the technology, they are building community capacity through workshops and ongoing support, demonstrating remarkable initiative and resilience. Supporting Sustenta Honduras reflects our belief in fostering the next generation of environmental stewards and equipping them with the tools to make a tangible difference. Read more.

Mechai Bamboo School

We’re also collaborating with the Mechai Bamboo School in rural Thailand, a remarkable institution operating on a unique model of community service. Located in a region grappling with significant air pollution, particularly during the annual burning season, the school empowers its students through practical engagement. Our joint program provides air quality monitors and hands-on training, equipping these young people with the knowledge of air quality science, the skills to use monitoring technology, and the inspiration to become active environmental stewards and advocates for cleaner air—reflecting AirGradient’s own community-focused beginnings. UNICEF

We are collaborating with UNICEF Lao PDR and Office of Innovation on an initiative to enhance air quality monitoring across the country. Recognizing the significant impact of air pollution on vulnerable populations, particularly children, this project addresses a historical data gap by deploying AirGradient monitors in 150 schools nationwide. This extensive network provides crucial real-time, localized air quality data, marking a substantial increase in monitoring capacity. The project also focuses on capacity building through hands-on training for teachers, students, and local officials, empowering communities to understand air quality, use monitoring tools, and take informed action to protect health. If you are already part of the program or are planning to join, please contact us; we might be able to support you through the platform.

We also offer a partner program which allows your organisation to earn up to 8% on monitors sold through a unique link. This is an opt-in program, and we view it as a way to share profits with our partners who help us in our mission to improve awareness around air quality.

If you are interested in either 1% For the Planet or in joining our commission program, please reach out to our team.
