AirGradient Open Air Max: Cellular Connectivity and SIM Card

Cellular Connection

The Open Air Max comes with a pre-installed SIM card and is designed to connect automatically.

When powered on, the monitor searches for a compatible cellular network and attempts to connect. No user configuration is usually required.

The status LED provides feedback during startup and connection. More on status LED behaviors: AirGradient Open Air Max: Status LED and Reporting Intervals

Included SIM Card

The included SIM card is a 1NCE IoT SIM card designed for low-data devices such as the Open Air Max.

Key Details:

  • It supports coverage in most countries, but coverage is not available everywhere. Check coverage here: https://www.1nce.com/en-eu/1nce-connect/coverage

  • The included data plan should last for approximately five years from activation.

  • If the included SIM does not work in your region, or if the data plan runs out, you can replace it with your own SIM card.

Using Your Own SIM Card

To replace the SIM, simply push the metal SIM bracket and slide it down to unlock the bracket.

Remove the old SIM card, slide in your own new SIM card, push the bracket in place and slide up to lock the SIM bracket.

If you replace the included SIM card, the replacement SIM must meet these requirements:

  • Nano SIM size
  • LTE CAT-1 support
  • Data plan suitable for IoT use

The Open Air Max uses very little data. As a guideline, a 500MB SIM card can be enough for around five years of measurements.

Checking Cellular Coverage

If the monitor does not connect:

  • Confirm that the installation location has 4G coverage.

  • Check coverage with a smartphone at the same location. You can remove the SIM card from the device and install it in your smartphone.

  • Move the monitor temporarily to a location with stronger signal and test again.

  • Allow the monitor time to retry automatically.

If cellular coverage is not available or unreliable at the location, you can switch the Open Air Max to WiFi as well or use a local SIM card.
